Since the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) became effective the approach to water issues has changed significantly. The concept of ecological status developed in this Directive, requires new methods capable of distinguishing different levels of ecological quality for the classification of surface water areas, including transitional and coastal waters. Water bodies within each surface water category are differentiated according to type to each is expected to be associated different communities. It is known that different scientific groups may have few information on biological elements used as bio-indicator to classify water bodies (fish, marine plants, phytoplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates) and on different water bodies conditions at high status. This information can help to a better understanding of ecosystem functioning and to established reference conditions for different water types. ICCE will promote scientific debate, and will try to bring together scientist opinions, and compile information aiming the application of suitable methodologies for the definition of coastal and transitional waters classification and establish guidelines for monitoring the water quality in Algarve (RH8, Portugal).
