Exhibition "Water and the Forest"
From Februery 18 to April 20
In this show of images seeks to highlight the aesthetic values of riparian galleries typical of the rivers of the South These are characterized by a high fluctuation of water levels and constitutions with a remarkable diversity, as for instance, the Coast Amiais's streams Southwest, the freixiais of excavated and the oleander and willows of the tributaries of the Guadiana River. The forests in Portugal are of the Mediterranean area and occupy a very significant, but in recent years has suffered many changes in terms of geographical distribution of dominant species. Are outstanding examples of this type of forests that exist in the Natural Park of Peneda Geres National Park and Arrábida. The Oaks (Quecus) characteristic of these forests have undergone a considerable decrease in its distribution throughout the country. Over the past 10 years there was an 8% decline in its geographical distribution. Currently, three species with larger area of distribution is the Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster), the cork oak (Quercus suber) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) Originating in Australia and Tasmania. In the Algarve, the forests of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) Of cork oak (Quercus suber) and stone pine (Pinus pinea) are the most representative, corresponding to 27%, 25% and 14% of forest area. The riparian hardwoods such as alder (Alnus glutinosa), the poplars (Populus spp.), The ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), willows (Salix spp.) And elm (Ulmus minor) represent only 1.27% of the forest Algarve.
