Exhibition "Água e a Floresta... O lugar Desconhecido"

From June 3 to August 31

For about 420 million years ago, plants and arthropods began the conquest of land … Nowdays has already been destroyed almost half of the original vegetation cover our planet!

Climate change is a current and relevant threat to forests, especially in the Mediterranean region, where Portugal belongs. Increases of temperature and frequency of droughts, associated with increasingly long fire seasons are expected.

These scenarios also provide for the increased frequency of storms and periods of heavy rains. In addition to significant damage in the forests of Central Europe, biologists expect widespread changes in growth and phenology in particular in terms of flowering seasons and age of maturity (Colaço, 2010). With many consequences for the welfare of the people …

The United Nations decreed 2011 as the International Year of Forests under the motto Forest for Everyone. Being considered important biodiversity reserves much endangered in recent decades, it is essential to alert the population to its recovery, conservation and sustainable management. Forests are ecosystems of great complexity that ensures a long list of service to humanity, are crucial to the formation of the soil, combating erosion, oxygen production, carbon sequestration, regulation of aquifers and atmospheric temperature, etc. In addition, we also provide many products, such as wood, Cork, resins, fibers, dyes, food and medicines.

To develop in Young people the understanding and respect for natural ecosystems, in particular in the fields of water and forest, the ICCE-UNESCO in collaboration with the National Commission of UNESCO, hosted the exposition Água e a Floresta... O Lugar Desconhecido.

It is a photographic exhibition by Nuno Serrano and João Pinto, who with sensitivity and scientific rigor, serves as a charming introductory element for the lovely work of children's literature from Álvaro Magalhães and Cristina Valadas - “O Lugar Desconhecido”.

The Rota da Cortiça was also included in this initiative to highlight the socio-economic importance of Cork in the Algarve region and in Portugal, as a relevant example, of a product that the Mediterranean forest offers us.
