||||
ABOUT THE LOICZ REGIONAL NODE FOR AFRICA PORTUGUESE SPEAKING COUNTRIES AND MENA REGIONThe mission of the Node is to promote the Ecohydrology approach and the LOICZ network. This includes to further develop and communicate methodologies through capacity building and scientific exchange, aiming to provide support for implementation of sustainable solutions for the management and restoration of estuaries and coastal areas. Target regions are the Portuguese speaking African countries and the Middle East and North African part of the Mediterranean region. The node is building up a network of scientists, also in connection with existing networks, dealing with different thematic aspects that provide a holistic vision to the complexity of issues involving changing estuaries and coastal areas. The regional node brings together the expertise from the UNESCO-IHP program in ecohydrology, the UNESCO working group on estuarine and coastal ecohydrology and the network of the International Centre for Coastal Ecohydrology, under the auspices of UNESCO (in process of establishment). |

Prof. Luis Chicharo has a scientific focus on the development of ecohydrology solutions for enhancing estuarine and coastal ecosystem functioning. Of central interest are the absorbing capacity and biogeochemical processes and responses to increasing anthropogenic and climate change pressure. The ecohhydrology concept seeks to scientifically inform the sustained ecosystem functioning, biodiversity and related services to nature and human society. Practical work he has been developing addresses the restoration of the functioning of estuaries and coastal ecosystems impacted by dams. |
